What is the History of the Christmas Tree Topper?
An angel placed at the ‘crown’ of the tree dates back to the Victorian era, in the mid-1800s, when Queen Victoria was in reign. Queen Victoria and her husband, Prince Albert, brought the first Christmas tree to Windsor Castle. This was a huge influence.
This tree was decorated with tinsel, ornaments, candles and angels. Christmas trees then became popularised all over the country as British citizens followed suit. And, what became fashionable in Britain was followed by the high society of the East Coast in the USA.
A photograph was published in the London News of the Royal Family standing around their Christmas tree with a Christmas angel as the tree topper. This publication alone caused the angel to become the most common Christmas tree topper.
Following this, in the 1870s, and with the growing power of the British Empire around the world, the Union Jack soon became the most popular Christmas tree topper.
